Rain Over Battle-Это молодая группа из Вирджинии, играющая в духе таких команд, как Against me, Lucero,The menzingers, The riot before.


Этим летом с сайта "death to false records"я скачал дебютную ер " "The full Effect of Thunder" ещё тогда неизвестной мне группы. Они зацепили меня с первых секунд первой песни - такое бывает в последнее время очень редко, особенно что касается совсем молодых команд. 4 бешеных песни с отличным вокалом! Я слушал и был поражён. Почти никакой информации о них нет, поэтому недавно я написал им на Myspace и попросил дать небольшое интервью. В этот же день ответил гитарист-вокалист группы Bennett Wales. Он был приятно удивлён тем фактом, что их знают за пределами Штатов и охотно согласился мне помочь.



- Привет Беннетт! Пожалуйста, расскажи об истории группы и её нынешнем составе.


Привет Ваня!

 Я начинал эту группу как сольный проект после своей предыдущей команды. Я полагал, что смогу сделать собственные шоу... Я был один приблизительно 2 года, играя концерты, где только выпадал шанс. Это были гаражи, кафе, подвалы – в общем, где была возможность сыграть, там я и играл. Только после нескольких месяцев таких концертов по подвалам я сделал настоящее шоу через парня по имени Rollie, который управляет компанией под названием 151 productions. C того самого момента он стал моим верным другом и всё чаще приглашал меня! Спустя приблизительно год после того как я начал играть у него, я решил, что действительно хочу иметь полноценную группу. Это была моя мечта, поэтому вскоре два моих хороших друга Nic Mirenda (bass) and Bryan Meader (drums) присоединились ко мне. Мы начали сочинять новые песни и играть шоу уже вместе, и я знал, что это были именно те парни, с которыми я хотел разделить это большое приключение. В прошлом году к нам также присоединился Dylan Wicher(Guitar)! С появлением второго гитариста мы получили именно тот звук, которые хотели!

 

- Были ли до этого у тебя другие проекты или у участников группы?


 Был один проект "Speakeasy". Но в нем не было ничего выдающегося, мы просто играли каверы на Sublime и Pepper. Rain over battle - действительно наша первая серьёзная группа.



- Я слышал, что вы сейчас работаете над дебютным альбомом. На какой стадии он находится? И будет ли он выдержан в духе "The full Effect of Thunder"?


 На данный момент мы находимся на стадии записи альбома. У меня ушёл примерно год на то чтобы везде выложить наши песни, чтобы больше людей могло их услышать. Мне кажется, что наш ЕР в самом деле отражает наш стиль, и я очень доволен тем, каким он получился, но я надеюсь все же, что альбом будет иметь более «наше», индивидуальное и особенное звучание, звук будет более насыщенным, так как у нас появился второй гитарист. Альбом будет построен на трех основных темах, могу сказать, что он будет концептуальным. Я думаю, что при прослушивании альбома люди смогут выделить и различить эти три темы. Могу предварительно сказать, что выпуск альбома планируется на Январь 2011 года. Этот альбом сможет показать, насколько мы интересны людям как группа, и, конечно же, он будет очень отличаться от нашего ЕР.

 
- Какое из ваших шоу было самым памятным для вас? Если можешь, расскажи немного о локальной сцене в Вирджинии и порекомендуй местные молодые команды.


 Одним из самых незабываемых шоу, которые мы играли, было на разогреве моей любимой группы....Against Me! Зал был переполнен, и концу шоу пот был уже повсюду. Публика действительно была рада нам, и это самая большая награда - видеть, как люди подпевают нашим песням и хорошо проводят время!
 Сцена Вирджинии достаточно крутая) Ричмонд был всегда добр к нам и мы хорошо дружим со многими группами оттуда. Из местных групп могу выделить"Drawn a Blank"(http://www.myspace.com/drawnablank). Совсем скоро они должны выпустить безумный альбом),так же This is your life, Hold Tight, Folk the System (мы все очень хорошие друзья - с самого детства)
 В последнее время в моём городе Virginia Beach появилось много хороших команд, которые для меня много значат. Мне кажется их уже тошнит от выступлений на хардкор-концертах, где подростки собираются только для того, чтобы побить друг друга. К сожалению, понимание о хардкоре сейчас сузилось до идеи о том, что главное тут – быть крутым и брутальным. Это не тот хардкор, который я знаю. Единственная мышца, которая должна сокращаться в хардкоре – это ваше сердце!


- Играли ли вы в каких-нибудь штатах кроме Вирджинии?


 Мы никогда не играли в других штатах. По большей части все упирается в деньги. Но в январе мы будем играть в Северной Каролине на Death To False Hope's Fest .


- Какие группы тебя больше всего вдохновили в начале пути? Я могу без преувеличения сказать, что ты своим вокалом напоминаешь мне Тома Гейбла. Были ли такие сравнения раньше?


 Каждого из нас вдохновляют различные жанры. Это помогает расширить музыкальные границы. Я лично был очень вдохновлён Against Me! Эта группа в значительной степени научила меня тому, что вообще такое – музыка, и как надо её играть! Я не поливаю их грязью, как многие сейчас делают. Я всё еще очень люблю их! Тома Гейбла я встречал пару раз ещё до того, как мы играли шоу с ними. По e-mail я задавал ему кучу разных вопросов, и он всегда был очень добр, всегда мог дать хороший совет!
 Так же я сильно вдохновлён олдскул хардкором.Я вырос на группах Minor Threat, Rites of Spring и Bad Brains. Меня поражает то, что те люди начали собственное движение, и это была не только музыка, но и смысл жизни!
 Хотя Against Me помогли мне осуществить мне мою мечту, создать свою группу, есть так же команды, которые повлияли на мою жизнь в целом – такие как The Gaslight Anthem, Lucero, Latterman, Pianos Become The Teeth и действительно приятная французская группа Le Pre Ou Je Suit Morte. Я так же люблю классическую музыку, очень люблю симфонии. Они настолько эпичны!
 Да, раньше меня уже сравнивали с Томом. И вообще Rain over battle часто сравнивали с Against me! Я бы хотел думать, что наша группа - не просто квинтэссенция музыки, которая на нас повлияла. Мы хотим так же удивлять и влиять на людей, как когда-то на нас повлияли наши любимые группы.

- Что ты знаешь о российской музыкальной сцене? Ты хотел бы побывать в России?


 Я буду откровенен! Я ничего не знаю о российской сцене! Но я приятно удивлён тем, что нас знают за океаном!!! Я бы очень хотел приехать в Россию с парой концертов)


- Какие панк-релизы этого года ты бы выделил, как самые лучшие?


 Конечно же Against me(White crosses), the gaslight anthem(american slang), The flatliners(Calvacade), Grown ups( More Songs).Это первое, что приходит в голову! Этот список можно продолжать бесконечно! Этот год был невероятным в плане релизов андеграудных панк-команд.

 - Чтобы ты хотел пожелать российским панкам?


 Я бы хотел пожелать российским панкам и всем любителям музыки, чтобы продолжали искать и находить новые для себя группы. Настоящие любители музыки всегда должны быть ненасытны в музыкальном плане. Есть очень много пиздатых групп, которые должны быть признаны! Так же спасибо, что вы все слушали Rain over battle, за ваши добрые слова и поддержку! 1. Please tell me briefly the history of your band and about present members of the band

 I started the band as a solo project after a previous band(with the same band members that are in ROB now) had fallen through. I figured fuck it, I'll go stag and book my own shows etc etc. I was solo for about two years, playing shows wherever I got the chance whther it was basements, garages coffee shops, anywhere I could find a show I was there. After only a few months doing basement shows, I got my first show at a venue through a guy named Rollie who runs a booking company out of Virginia called 151 productions. Ever since that first show he has remained a tight friend and has been booking me, and my band, ever since. About a year after I started playing shows at venues, I decided that I really wanted to have a full band. It was my dream and vision. Not soon after that, my two freinds Nic Mirenda (bass) and Bryan Meader (drums) we're immediately on board. We started hammering out songs and began playing shows together and I knew they were the guys I wanted to share this great adventure with! Within the last year, we have added another member to the band on guitar (dylan Wicher) and I am stoked because now ROB has that full sound I was looking for!

2.Tell me some words about the previous music projects that you and other guys in your band had before.

 Really the only previous projects we all had going on was a really typical jam band called Speakeasy...nothing really ever happened with that. Partially because the songs that were played in that band were mostly Sublime and Pepper covers... ROB is really our first serious band though

3.I've heard that now you're working on your debut album. At what stage is it now and will it be in the style of your EP?

Right now we are currently in the writing phase of the album. I have taken about a year to lay out the songs and get them where I want them as far as lyrics go. Musically I feel like this EP will really capture our true style as a band. Although I absolutely love how our EP turned out, I feel like our album will definitely be more a "us" sound and it will sound more full because we have another guitarist. The album has three different themes and is somewhat of a conceptual album. I think when people listen to it they will definitely be able to separate the three themes without any problem. Right now the tentative release is January. This album will definitely be a good barometer to gauge how much people like us as a band as well. It is going to be really different from the EP for sure.

4.Which of your shows was the most memorable for you? Which was the coolest one?

Could you also tell me of your local scene in Virginia and recommend me some new local bands?

 I think one of the most memorable shows that we played was when we opened for my favorite band...AGAINST ME! It was absolutely packed and by the end of the show there was sweat dripping from the ceiling. They we're really awesome guys and the crowd was really receptive to us and it is always such a reward to see people singing along to your songs and having a good time. The scene in Virginia is pretty cool. Richmond has always been really welcoming to us and we are friends with a lot of bands from there. If I had to recommend some Virginia bands, I would say to check out Drawn A Blank (also releasing an AWESOME album soon) This Is Your Life, Hold Tight, Folk The System( they fucking rule. good friends since I was a toddler). The list goes on and on. Recently in my city Virginia Beach, there have been pop punk bands coming out of the woodwork which I am stoked on. I think they are sick of going to hardcore shows and having to deal with kids who are just there to beat eachother up. Unfortunately the hardcore scene has been reduced to the idea that you have to be macho and tough. Thats not the hardcore I know. To me, the only muscle you should flex in hardcore is your heart.

5.In which cities did you play except Virginia? Did you play outside the U.S.?

We have never played in any other state except for Virginia thus far. Mostly because money is tight, and we are all in school in different states. We will be playing North Carolina though in January for Death To False Hope's Fest which I am really amped on. 

6.Which bands had inspired you at the start? I can say without exaggeration, that you are just young Tom Gabel!! Have you heard similar comparissons before?

As a band, all four of us are inspired by completely different genres of music. Which I love because it allows us to really branch out. For me personally I was inspired by Against Me! that band pretty much taught me what it means to make music. I don't give a shit what people say about them now haha. I still love them. Tom Gabel and I had met a few times before we played with them and I had emailed him a bunch of times and he was always really good about giving me advice and told me that even if I never had a band just to do it solo and to never take no for an answer. Also I was really inspired by the DC hardcore movement. I grew up on bands like Minor Threat and Rites of Spring and Bad Brains. The fact that those kids in that scene started there own movement and that punk for them was just music, it was a way of life. That aspect just made me realize that music was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Although Against Me! is what got me into wanting to really go after my dream of being in a band, there are so many other amazing bands that have influenced me not just musically but have impacted my life in general. BAnds like The GAslight Anthem, Lucero, Latterman, Pianos Become The Teeth, oh and this really sweet french band called Le Pre Ou Je Suit Morte. I am really into classical music also, I love symphony music. It is so epic! I grew up singing that kind of stuff and performing with orchestras and I always loved big build ups and epic parts.I have heard that I sound like Tom, and that ROB does has an Against Me! style influence, but I would like to think that our band isn't just a rehash of our influences. We definitely acknowledge and stress that we want to impact and move people with music in the same way our heroes and influences impacted us.

7.Do you know anything about Russian music scene (maybe some bands). And what do you know of Russia in general?Do you want to visit our country?)

 To be completely honest, I don't know anything about the Russian music scene! I am stoked that our music is getting out there though. I had no idea we were being heard all the way over there across the pond haha. I would absolutely love to come to Russia and do a tour!

8.Which this year's latest punk releases did you like best?

My favorite releases this year we're Against Me!'s White Crosses, Gaslight Anthem's American Slang, The Flatliners Cavalcade, The Grown Ups's More Songs, gah this is a hard question because there are so many that I was stoked on! Let's just put it this way, this year was a fucking incredible year for underground music. 

9.What would you like to wish to Russian punks?

Well I guess if I had to say anything to Russian punks, or just fans of music in general, it would be just keep searching for new bands. For true fans of music, appetites for new bands are insatiable. There are so many fucking great bands out there that deserve to be recognized. And also thank you for listening to Rain Over Battle and for your mind words and support and please continue to listen!
